Job offer: Photo editor – The Eyeopener

Eyeopener is Ryerson University’s independent student newspaper, established in 1967. It is owned and operated by Rye Eye Publishing Inc., a non-profit student-owned company at Ryerson. The eye Temporarily prints a bi-monthly newspaper in fall 2021 due to COVID-19 and continues to regularly post content online, including articles, videos, photo essays and a newsletter.

Eyeopener is looking for students with an interest in media and journalism who are able to work both independently and with a larger team to produce Ryerson-based content for publication.

Job offer: photo editor

Presentation: The Photo Editor will co-manage the photo and illustration section of our journal, alongside two other photo editors, producing and curating visuals to complement published articles and other content. The Photo Editor will work closely with Section Editors and help recruit and develop volunteer contributors to the Photo Section, while editing and correcting submitted work.

Photo editors are responsible for ensuring that all visuals are eye-catching, visually appealing, and relevant to the content and tone of the work they represent.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Help section editors pitch visuals to accompany the content, delegate the work to volunteer contributors and ensure their quality in time for publication;
  • Raise awareness to recruit, hire, help and train volunteer photo and visual contributors;
  • Complete visual orders (i.e. illustrations, photographs, graphics and event coverage);
  • Design of covers;
  • Maintain an organized archive of visuals;
  • Make sure all visuals are accessible (for example, write effective alt text);
  • Participation in weekly editorial meetings

Qualifications

  • Must be a student enrolled in a full-time program at Ryerson University
  • Proficiency in digital illustration (Clip Studio Paint, ProCreate or Adobe Illustrator), design and typography, visual accessibility, DSLRs and other photography equipment, and Adobe Photoshop / Creative Suite
  • Experience with WordPress and InDesign are assets, but not required

  • Has strong communication, organizational, multitasking and leadership skills;
  • Has good time management and self-discipline;
  • Performs well in a rapidly changing environment subject to new / changing situations

This is a paid contractual position from October to the end of November, with an option to extend another term. Due to COVID-19, work may be performed remotely and / or in Eyeopener office on the second floor of the Ryerson Student Center, as the successful candidate can provide proof of full immunization status.
