Job Offer: Communications Officer – Broadbent Institute

Position
PressProgress is looking for a BC Reporter to join our award-winning team of journalists.
Deadline June 24.

This position is based in British Columbia and involves producing original investigative reporting on a wide range of stories related to federal, provincial and municipal politics, labor and big business, and
other important social and economic issues in British Columbia.

Our journalism focuses on holding the rich and powerful accountable, exposing unfair and unhealthy working conditions, and exposing hate and bigotry. Several million Canadians read our stories each year and our work has been quoted by every major news agency in Canada, as well as prominent news outlets in the United States and Europe.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Here are the main tasks you are expected to do in this job:

  • Regularly present and produce original and hard-hitting investigative journalism on assigned topics related to PressProgress priority coverage areas.
  • File freedom of information requests, obtain public records, and tell stories using data.
  • Interview officials and subject matter experts.
  • Keep up to date with what’s happening in British Columbia with media monitoring tools.
  • Exercise good judgment and follow responsible journalistic practices.

QUALIFICATIONS
The person we are looking for will ideally meet several of these criteria:

  • Journalism work experience
  • Post-secondary degree in a field with a journalism, public policy or communications focus
  • Strong writing skills, critical thinking and attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced news environment
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, provincial and municipal politics in British Columbia and familiarity with key political, media and labour/business figures in the province
  • Experience in filing FOI, obtaining public documents and other relevant research skills
  • Experience with video, audio or graphic design and other digital media tools
  • Interest in labor issues and commitment to Broadbent principles and social justice

This is a permanent, full-time unionized position governed by a collective agreement between the Broadbent Institute and the UFCW 1006-A. The position can be located anywhere in British Columbia and requires working from home.
