CRF coach reportedly staying behind despite university job offer


A recent Florida International job posting calling for head coach applications has led some to believe the football coach Butch davis was going to retire soon.

The list, posted on the American Football Coaches Association job site, shows that the FIU is looking for some sort of head coach for one of its various sports programs. A recent FootballScoop report claims that multiple sources confirmed ahead of the 2021 season that Davis plans to retire after his conclusion.

But according to Brett McMurphy of Action NetworkDavis has no plans to quit his coaching job anytime soon.

Butch davis did not notify the FIU of his retirement, sources said @ActionNetworkHQ”McMurphy wrote in a Tweet. “The CRF university website lists job openings for every head coach and assistant in every sport, even when there are no vacancies. The FIU has been doing this for years to create a perpetual pool for people to apply ”

The job posting reads: “Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, FIU is seeking applications for the Head Coach position. The CRF is a member of Conference USA and offers seventeen (17) NCAA Division I sports programs. The successful candidate will provide overall direction of the sports program, including recruitment, skills education, student-athlete development, budget management, development of a competition schedule, academic performance monitoring, community engagement, fundraising, personnel management, and play coaching and coaching. ”

He goes on to say that the FIU is looking for candidates with experience in a number of fields, listing all of its varsity sports as potential candidates.

Five games and the CRF is not getting the best start. With a 1-4 record, the Golden Panthers’ only victory came against FCS Long Island. The Golden Panthers have lost all four of their games to FBS opponents by an average margin of 20 points. It comes after they went winless in 2020 and had a losing record the year before.

Davis is now 24-25, with a 14-14 record in C-USA, in five years as a CRF coach. He’s 1-2 in bowl games, leading the Golden Panthers to the playoffs in his first three years at the helm.

Prior to his hiring at the FIU in 2017, Davis was the head coach in North Carolina (2007-10) and Miami from 1995-2000.

He also has a long NFL coaching resume, winning two Super Bowls with Dallas from 1989-94 and, in 2001, becoming head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
